The Power Industry welcomes some very exciting opportunities, such as those incited by the economical production of shale gas. This has prompted many power providers to strategize on how much to invest in new gas plants and/or conversion from coal. The drive for alternative energy sources is also a factor throughout the power industry. Nuclear, wind, solar, etc. all are viable sources of energy but have execution and economic challenges. The power industry also must face challenges such as the declining condition of the distribution and transmission infrastructure and ever change government regulations.
Capital Project Impact:
The capital project environment in the Power sector has been impacted extensively over the past several years. The power industry struggles with the same engineering, construction and project management resource limitations as other capital intensive industries. Projects are impacted by extensive regulatory requirements, permitting constraints and life cycle cost. The sheer magnitude of the capital project portfolio planned over the next 5 years is a challenge in itself.
